About the Cape Florida Lighthouse
The
original
structure
was built
in 1825
and was
abandoned
in
early1835
after
Seminole
Indians
massacred
the wife
and
children
of Keeper
William
Cooley.
In
early
July,
three
guards
were
posted to
protect
the new
Keeper,
John
Dubose.
Running
short of
supplies,
Dubose and
one guard
sailed to
Key West
and left
the two
remaining
guards,
Aaron
Carter and
John
Thompson
to tend to
the light.
On
July 23,
1836, a
large
group of
Seminoles
attacked
the light
and killed
Carter
after
setting
fire to
the door,
forcing
Thompson
up to the
top and
out on the
ledge of
the tower.
Thompson
had a
number of
wounds on
his feet
and the
Indians
were
breaking
down the
door!
In
a
desperate
move,
Thompson
flung a
keg of
gunpowder
down the
stairs in
an effort
to kill
himself
and avoid
a
torturous
capture.
The
blast put
out the
fire and
destroyed
the stairs
but
somehow
did not
harm
Thompson!
Out
on the
ledge,
Thompson
played
dead and
the
Indians
finally
left.
Over
two
hundred
bullet
holes were
counted in
the top of
the light!
Thompson
lay in the
sun,
without
water and
afraid to
move,
until the
next day,
when the
crew of a
U.S. Naval
vessel
came to
the
rescue.
The
present
structure,
standing
ninety-five
feet tall
was built
in 1855.
There’s
a lot of
history
here and
it’s a
great
place to
visit!
