About the Lights . . .
This popular aid to navigation joins
Sheffield Island Light to the east,
helping guide mariners and commercial traffic into the channel leading to
the Norwalk River and the quaint harbor town of Rowayton. The channel is
on the inside of the Norwalk Islands and requires close attention to
piloting to stay off the sandbars and rocks. However, the scenery is great and there
are great sunsets to be viewed from this beautiful place.
This light was built around 1900, stands 62 feet high, flashes red
and white and can be seen for fourteen miles under the right conditions.
It is located about one mile from shore, south of Darien. It is an
automated light and horn and is closed to the public.
Listening to the deep rumbling sound of the foghorn from this light is
always a moving experience, like some people get from hearing a train
whistle. It makes me think of the sea and memories of sailing in fog.
There was a buoy just to the west of the lighthouse that was
often used as a starting or turning mark for the many racing fleets in
the area. We participated, with our family boat in many of these
races using that mark. It's gone now, like a great many things we took
for granted.
But the light remains!
