Bug Light Story
Original
construction
was in
1870; she
was
deactivated
in 1945
and bought
by the
Orient
Point
Historical
Society in
1955.
After
a great
deal of
work by
the
Society,
the Coast
Guard
declared
the light
a federal
aid to
navigation
in 1993.
She shows
a white
flashing
light
every four
seconds
and stands
63 feet
tall.
Located
off the
western
tip of
Orient
Beach
State
Park, this
very
popular
light
earned the
nickname
of
“Bug”
because
sailors
thought it
resembled
a bug from
a
distance.
She guides
sailors
between
Orient
Point and
Gardiner’s
Bay,
steering
them past
the
dangerous
sandbar
off Long
Beach.
Visitors may arrange to stay overnight at the light by contacting the East End Seaport Museum.
