 About Pensacola Light

Uniquely situated on the Pensacola Naval Air Station, this tall beauty stands one hundred and ninety-one feet tall and flashes a white light every twenty seconds that can be seen for twenty-seven miles.  She was built in 1858!

Historically, Confederates assumed authority of the Pensacola Lighthouse at the beginning of the War Between the States.  They decommissioned the light and removed some vital parts.  However, Union forces occupied Fort Pickens across the bay!

The South used the lighthouse tower as a lookout tower and spotted for nearby artillery.  Inevitably, some canon shots from Fort Pickens hit the tower!

It should be noted that as the South retreated, they burned and destroyed a number of buildings. . . .  but the lighthouse was spared!

She is open to the public.
