Short Story about the Light

Oddly, this lighthouse story is about another light – the Old Point Loma Lighthouse!  She sits atop Pt. Loma and is the jewel in the crown of  Cabrillo National Monument Park.

Old Pt. Loma Light was built in 1855 and remains as one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the west coast.  She was designed to be a very important aid to navigation – so necessary in those days of limited navigational tools!  However, she was only active for about thirty-five years because she was so high in the sky (422’ ASL) that passing ships could not see the light because of the fog and clouds – which were often lower than the light.

In 1891, they built the new Point Loma Light that shows a Flashing White Light every 15 seconds, stands 115’ tall and her light can be seen for twenty-five nautical miles. She also sounds a horn during fog to guide sailors to safety.
