About the Sankaty Lighthouse . . .

Sankaty Head Light was built of brick in 1850 on a ninety-foot bluff, giving it an effective height of one hundred and sixty-six feet above sea level.  Sankaty is an Indian word for highland.

She shows a flashing white light every seven and a half seconds and is visible from twenty-four miles away.  In daylight she is identified by a red stripe around her middle!

Before this light was built, sailors plying their trade, considered Nantucket a very dangerous place because of the perilous Davis South shoals just offshore of the island.   Many a ship went to the bottom trying to navigate these waters!  Even with the lighthouse, mariners remain wary of these dreaded shoals!

Nantucket is a great place to visit with its cobblestone streets,  many restaurants, beautiful museums, good shopping, and a very interesting marina.  The island is steeped in maritime history, and a walk along the streets of well kept houses and picket fences with flowers everywhere won't soon be forgotten.

You will not regret visiting this special place!
