About Stamford Light
Also known as Stamford Harbor Ledge Light, this spark plug design was built in 1882 and rises to eighty feet high. When she was active, she showed a flashing white light every four seconds. She is privately owned.
We know this light quite well! For fifteen years, from May to September, we would
sail by her almost every Tuesday night.
We raced sailboats with a nice group called the Breakwater Irregulars. It was
informal racing, but very competitive and you had to fly a spinnaker if you wanted to
win. The lighthouse's satellite buoy was our finish line.
Then we would all meet in a little Italian restaurant in town and close out the evening!
This light has witnessed many regattas, including the annual Stamford/Denmark race.
Picture a couple of hundred, beautiful, colorful sailboats, sailing hull down, flying
their division flags, vying for position at the starting line, sometimes within a few
feet of each other. Some boats measuring over sixty feet.
The consort to the Queen of Denmark, was a regular at these regattas,
and once, the
Queen came over to watch the races. I still have a commemorative plate from that race!
Sadly, this light is no longer needed!
Overshadowed by a skeletal tower on the west
breakwater, she waits silently as time strips her of her remaining pride!
