About The Light

Standing tall at 145 feet (ASL), this majestic beauty marks the mouth of the Savannah River.  She was built in 1867, and shows a fixed white light that can be seen for nineteen miles.

Her heritage goes back to a ninety foot wooden tower built in 1736; so there is a lot of history here.

Interestingly, her original identifying color scheme was black top half and white bottom half.  A few years ago, the scheme was changed to black top third, white middle and bottom painted black.  This change is of great interest to mariners because the USCG Light Lists show the old colors…..and that can be very confusing!

This is a fun visit and the light is open to visitors and there is a nice gift shop!
