Brant Point Light

Nantucket, maSSACHUSETTS

Brant Point light guards the northern entrance into Nantucket Harbor.

Built in 1746, it is the second oldest lighthouse in the United States.  Boston Light is the first, built in 1716.

Like most lighthouses, a visit to this diminutive light (twenty-nine feet high) will take you back in time to the days of whalers and merchant ships plying their trade in these waters.  You will find it easy to imagine the billowing sails of the great ships passing this light, as if on parade.

It is also a very good place for watching terrific sunsets and just sitting on the beach watching the boats go by.

Brant Point Light shows a red light every four seconds and when the fog rolls in, which is quite often, it signals one horn blast every ten seconds to help guide sailors to safety.

They say throwing pennies overboard as you round this light insures your return to the island.
