Goose Rocks Light A

Fox Island Thorofare, Penobscot Bay, North Haven, ME

This cast iron "sparkplug" style offshore lighthouse was built in 1890 to mark a dangerous ledge in the picturesque thoroughfare between the Fox Islands near Isle a Haut and Acadia National Park. Automated in 1963, Goose Rocks continues to serve as an aid to navigation. She stands 51 feet tall and flashes a red light every six seconds that can be seen for eleven miles - in fog, her great horn blasts a signal every ten seconds.

This light is owned by the non-profit organization, Beacon Preservation, Inc. of North Haven, Maine, which has undertaken the complete restoration and historic preservation of Goose Rocks. Schedule to open to the public in 2009, Goose Rocks is one of the rare lighthouses where sailors and lighthouse enthusiasts can enjoy a private "keeper's experience" or overnight visit by arrangement.
