Point Loma Lighthouse (New)

Point loma, san diego, ca

Oddly, this lighthouse story is about another light - the Old Point Loma Lighthouse that sits atop Point Loma and is the jewel in the crown of Cabrillo National Monument Park.

Old Pt. Loma Light was built in 1855 and remains as one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the west coast. She was designed to be a very important aid to navigation - so necessary in those days of limited navigational tools! However, she was only active for about thirty-five years because she was placed so high in the sky (422' ASL) that passing ships could not see the light because of fog, and clouds that were often lower than the light itself.

In 1891, the government built the new Point Loma Lighthouse down at the base of  Point Loma that shows a Flashing White Light every 15 seconds, stands 115' tall and her light can be seen for twenty-five nautical miles.

She also sounds a mighty fog horn when needed.
