Split Rock Light

two harbors, mn

This beautiful lighthouse, sitting on it's eagle perch atop a sheer drop cliff of one hundred and sixty-eight feet above sea level was first lit in 1910. She showed a sweeping white light that could be seen for fifteen miles and her two-toned horn could be heard from five miles away.

Conceived after a November storm in 1905 which damaged twenty ships on this rocky coastline ... she served until 1969- a victim of technology. There is a gathering each year to celebrate the anniversary of the Edmond Fitzgerald that sank on November 10, 1975 with the loss of twenty-nine souls. There is a reading of names and the light is lit at dusk for the occasion.
