Thomas Point Shoal Light

annapolis, md

Built in 1875, this very popular and unusual light stands forty-three feet above sea level and is identified by a white light that flashes every six seconds.  She features and electronic horn and her light can be seen from eleven miles away.

She is of screw-pile construction…literally, a large screw that holds fast in the muddy bottoms of the Chesapeake Bay.  Actually, the first effort failed – due to ice flow that seriously damaged the lighthouse.  Rip Rap was built up around the base to protect the structure during the icy winters.

Thomas Point Shoal Light is an active navigational aid and is located south of Annapolis and just north of the mouth of the South River.

 Definitely worth seeing!
